I have come to realize that much of event photography comes down to access. As a teacher at Cypress High School, I get incredible access on the field during events. Not only do many of the students know me personally, but I am right there in the mix alongside the action. I also love graduations. It’s literally the very last thing students do in high school (aside from grad night) and perhaps one of the most memorable moments in their young lives. That’s why I love photographing graduations, it’s a turning point and milestone that many of us pass in the road of life yet it’s different for each of us. My main focus during graduation is the moment after students receive their diplomas. They are walking back to their seat as graduates, this is the “walk” of graduation that kept them from doing dumb things and the moment that they dreamed of…and I get to be there to capture it.
